Darksiders 2
Based on remarks made at this year's International Game Developers
Association (IGDA) Leadership Forum, THQ executive vice president Danny
Bilson revealed that the sequel to Darksiders
will be a story that actually runs concurrent to the events in the
first game. This is surprising development considering (SPOILER AHEAD)
the ending of Darksiders seemed to set up a sequel in which the Four
Horsemen of the Apocalypse would be reunited in the war against Heaven
and Hell (END SPOILER). Whether it's a follow-up featuring a more badass
War, or a concurrent story, we're certainly intrigued by what's next in
this franchise.
Final Fantasy Versus XIII
Metal Gear Solid Rising
Raiden has moved from a wannabe annoying sidekick to a sort of badass
Snake Eyes-from-GI-Joe-style super ninja for the Kojima-verse. Unlike
the other "traditional" Metal Gear Solid titles, which were "tactical
espionage" games, Rising looks like it uses the same sort of stealth
mechanics as Team Ninja's Ninja Gaiden.
That is, instead of sneaking around and using boxes, you simply have
Raiden run in and cut fools faster than they can spot him. While some of
us hope for a return to a traditional MGS game, a few of us are
actually looking forward to seeing Kojima and his pals tackle a pure
ninja action game.
Diablo III
Guild Wars II
Unlike other games in the genre, it doesn't limit you to working
together in a party; rather, it rewards you for helping out other
players regardless of affiliation. The game's new social mechanics,
combined with its lack of a subscription fee, make this the most
anticipated MMO of 2012.
Bio Shock Infinite
With a small resume that features quality titles like System Shock 2, Freedom Force, and BioShock,
Irrational Games has already earned a spot on our "check out without
reservation" list. Even though it has "BioShock" in the title, and we
know that the basic gameplay formula of "shooter with some crazy powers"
has been preserved, everything else looks utterly original: A private
investigator guides a girl who can tear the fabric of reality through an
ultranationalist floating city. All while dealing with strikingly
relevant factions such as xenophobic government troops and angry
commoners labeled as terrorists. And also evading the pursuit of a giant
mechanical Maltese Falcon. The sheer originality and established
creativity behind Irrational makes this one of the more exciting titles
in 2012 for us.
